LUMSALibera Università Maria Ss. Assunta (LUMSA) was founded in 1939, it is the 2nd oldest University in Rome and it is a highly ranked Italian Non – State University.

It counts around 9.000 students and 500 staff (teaching, research and administrative staff). The main campus is in Rome and there are also two other campuses in Taranto (Apulia) and in Palermo (Sicily).

LUMSA was established by a woman, Luigia Tincani, for a main and profound reason: to contribute to an intellectual and humanistic education free from the ideological pressures of the time.

It offers bachelor's and master’s degree programs in the human sciences, communication sciences, psychology, law, economics, political sciences and modern languages.

LUMSA awards Ph. D. degrees in social policies, law, developmental psychopathology, education and economics. All training programs, including PhDs, are open to international students.

LUMSA has signed more than 160 bilateral agreements worldwide (Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa); and it has been awarded by the European Commission with two Excellence Labels: ECTS and DS Label.

LUMSA is very well known in Italy as a university devoted to teachers’ initial training as well as for organizing courses for the training of in – service teachers.

The School of Education awards first – level diplomas in professional education, social work, psychology and educational sciences, second – level diplomas in the same fields, as well as Ph. D. degrees.

The University has carried out many joint projects to modernise teaching methods, resources and curricula for the inclusion of students with Special Educational Needs.

Every year the University organizes courses for the specialization of teachers who will work with disabled students in different kind and level of schools. In addition, LUMSA organizes specific programs for teachers who will work with students with Autism, students with ADHD, or students with learning disorders.
